Mintz, Jerome R. - author and photographer. LEGENDS OF THE HASIDIM: An Introduction to Hasidic Culture and Oral Tradition in the New World. Chicago: U. of Chicago Press, 1968. First Printing. Octavo, hardbound in blue cloth; pictorial dust jacket. 462ppm including index. A superb collection of over 370 myths, folktales, legends, etc., along with acute anthropological analysis of their influences and implications. Scholarly scope, but very warm and readable. One of the few works of its type, and still a standard reference today. Includes history and mores of the Hasidic Jews (mostly 1950 s Eastern European immigrants to New York) - role of the Rebbe, upbringing of children, place of women, mysticism, sociology, the various courts , relations with the outside world, and much more. The timeframe ranges from Napoleonic times to the Arab-Israeli War of 1967. The author interviewed many storytellers. Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Galicia, etc. Appendixes: Storytellers (names, occupations, list of tales), Rebbes and other historical figures. Glossary, extensive bibliography CONDITION: Very Good. Book has very minor wear to extremities; former owner s name neatly inked on front free endpaper. Jacket (now protected in a Mylar sleeve) has minor edgewear and a small scuff on the back with surface paper loss affecting a few words of the jacket blurb. Nice copy.
